Use the door labels, build evidence, owner manual and configuration-specific towing table. Weigh the completed truck and trailer for the working case. If a claimed diesel advantage disappears under the actual pin weight, passengers, cargo or axle load, remove it from the pro column.

Pro: standardized fuel evidence can support some comparisons

Con: fuel savings are not guaranteed

Many HD configurations do not have an applicable public light-duty fuel-consumption row, and standardized tests do not reproduce every trailer, route, winter condition, idle pattern or driver. Fuel prices also change. Do not assign a result from another model, body, powertrain or market to the candidate.

Compare litres and cost over the same work, period and distance. Include gasoline alternatives that can actually do the assignment. A fuel-only payback can be useful as a diagnostic, but it excludes acquisition, borrowing, maintenance, repairs, insurance, downtime and exit uncertainty.

Pro: long loaded routes may align with the operating plan

A buyer whose recurring work includes sustained loaded operation can make deliberate use of the selected diesel configuration and follow its model-year operating guidance. Longer planned routes may also fit the buyer's refuelling and service pattern better than frequent short, low-load use.

This is not a blanket claim that highway use protects a truck or extends life. It means the actual duty cycle should be compared with manufacturer instructions, emissions-system needs and maintenance triggers rather than reduced to annual kilometres.

Con: short-trip and idle-heavy duty need closer scrutiny

Frequent short trips, extended idle or PTO operation, low average load, severe cold, dust and stop-start work can change how the truck is operated and maintained where the exact literature says they do. Capture engine and idle hours as well as distance; do not use a universal hours-to-kilometres conversion.

Review the applicable aftertreatment operation, warning response and maintenance schedule before purchase. If the routine does not fit the truck's documented requirements or the buyer cannot adjust it, that is a practical disadvantage even when the engine can perform the occasional heavy task.

Con: weak service access magnifies downtime

A remote buyer may face longer travel, towing, accommodation, lost work, rental equipment or spare-truck needs for routine or diagnostic work. Add only real buyer-specific consequences. Do not publish a national labour rate or assume every facility supports every year and configuration.
