One same-year Ford manual demonstrates the split
Ford's March 2020 Super Duty manual covers Canadian and U.S. F-250 through F-600 vehicles and includes the 6.2L and 7.3L gasoline engines alongside the 6.7L diesel. Its table of contents separates gas and diesel starting, fuel, oil, air-filter, coolant and parts sections, and its scheduled-maintenance chapter separates gasoline and diesel special-operating-condition tables.
That document is useful because it controls manufacturer, model family and model year while exposing engine-specific work. It is not proof that every diesel costs more or that every gas engine is simpler. Exact installed equipment and the manual's own conditions still determine each row.
Build schedules from triggers, not a generic interval
For every item, record all applicable triggers: elapsed time, kilometres, engine hours, dashboard monitor, condition and special duty. The next service is governed by the earliest applicable trigger unless the exact manual says otherwise. A low-kilometre truck can reach a calendar limit; an idling work truck can accumulate hours with little distance; a monitor can call for engine oil while other components remain calendar- or distance-based.
Do not compare “oil every X kilometres” unless both manuals actually use that rule for the stated duty. Preserve each manufacturer's message timing, outer limits and reset procedure. Resetting a monitor is completion evidence only when the specified service was performed.
Normal, severe and special duty can reverse the workload
The duty classification is part of the maintenance evidence. Ford's 2020 manual provides extra gasoline and diesel maintenance for conditions such as extensive idling, low-speed commercial work, dust, off-road operation and towing. Its diesel towing table includes fuel-filter, coolant and hour-based conditions; those rows do not become gas-engine requirements.
GM's 2021 3.0L diesel supplement identifies frequent trailer towing, hilly terrain, heavy city traffic in hot weather, taxi, police or delivery use among severe-service contexts. It also converts extended idle time into maintenance distance for that application. Describe the actual week and select the matching exact table; never invent a “severe-service multiplier.”
Engine oil comparison requires specification, quantity and duty
Compare oil as a service package: exact specification and viscosity, fill quantity with filter, monitor or interval rule, filter, labour, disposal, top-up history and access. A larger sump or different specification affects material cost, but it does not establish engine life. Price the exact quantity and product from dated local sources.
Ford's 2020 manual contains separate gasoline- and diesel-engine oil sections and an oil-life framework. The GM 2021 3.0L supplement specifies dexosD oil for that engine and uses its oil-life system plus a calendar boundary. Those facts apply to the named documents only. Do not transfer the 3.0L requirement to a 6.6L diesel, a gas engine or a different model year.
Filters and water management are not interchangeable
A gasoline truck may have engine-air and cabin filters plus any exact-model service items. A diesel can add one or more serviceable fuel filters, water-separation procedures and filter-life messages. Count the installed components and follow the manual; do not assume every diesel uses the same number, location or interval.
The reviewed 2020 Ford diesel schedule calls out engine-mounted and frame-mounted fuel filters in defined special-duty tables. GM's 2021 3.0L supplement describes water-in-fuel response, priming and a fuel-filter trigger tied to time, the driver message and certain operating conditions. Neither instruction is a universal diesel rule or evidence of a failure rate.
DEF and aftertreatment are operating systems, not maintenance folklore
Later diesels may include DEF/SCR, DPF regeneration and EGR-related operating instructions. Record specified DEF, warnings, system checks and any scheduled aftertreatment service from the exact literature. DEF is an operating consumable distinct from engine oil and diesel fuel; regeneration is an operating process, not a generic preventive service to sell on a calendar.
Do not add an invented annual DEF quantity, forced-regeneration interval or emissions repair allowance. Investigate warnings, incomplete readiness, recent code clearing, unsupported tuning or missing hardware through qualified diagnosis. A gas truck has its own emissions controls and diagnostic requirements; the comparison must record actual equipment rather than treating “gas” as maintenance-free.
Cooling systems and fluids must stay application-specific
List every cooling circuit, coolant specification, capacity and time/distance trigger. A diesel with separate low-temperature or charge-air cooling can have a different service scope from a gas truck, but the actual manual decides. Transmission, transfer-case, axle, brake and power-steering fluids also follow installed components and duty, not fuel type alone.
The 2021 3.0L and 2025 6.6L GM diesel supplements demonstrate that even two Duramax applications have different literature and service details. Use the supplement together with the vehicle owner manual; a diesel supplement does not necessarily contain every chassis interval.
Chassis maintenance may be common—but configurations still differ
Brakes, tires, steering, suspension, wheel bearings, driveline joints, batteries, corrosion and safety inspections apply to complete trucks. When equivalent diesel and gas candidates share the same chassis and duty, much of this work may be comparable. Different engine weight, axle, wheel arrangement, plow package, service body or towing assignment can change wear and inspection context.

Build a maintenance ledger by date and predicted kilometre/hour trigger within the holding period.
