RAM 5500 towing capacity depends on the incomplete chassis and its finished work body. RAM's original U.S.-market 2023 Crew Cab chart reaches 34,540 lb only in identified 4x2 rows with the 6.7L Cummins, Aisin HD six-speed, 4.89 axle and 43,000-lb GCWR. The highest reviewed gas cell is 20,990 lb. Drive, cab-to-axle length, engine, axle, GVWR, GCWR, installed body, hitch and final-stage labels remain attached to every figure. Exact answer from the 2023 Crew Cab chart
The highest reviewed RAM 5500 trailer cell is 34,540 lb. RAM ties it to 4x2 Crew Cab chassis with the 6.7L Cummins, Aisin HD six-speed, 4.89 axle and 43,000-lb GCWR. It appears in both reviewed 60- and 84-inch cab-to-axle row groups because their published 8,303-lb base weight is the same.
This is a U.S.-market incomplete-chassis result, not a promise for every dually or finished service truck. Four-wheel drive, the 4.44 axle, gas power, a heavier upfit, rear overhang, hitch structure and actual working load change the usable answer.
Diesel rows: axle ratio drives the large split
The same four configurations with the 4.44 axle use 32,000-lb GCWR and publish 23,540 or 23,210 lb. Engine identity alone therefore cannot select a towing value; axle and drive must be confirmed.
| 2023 Crew Cab diesel example | Axle / GCWR | Published base weight | Maximum trailer |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4x2, 60-inch C/A | 4.89 / 43,000 lb | 8,303 lb | 34,540 lb |
| 4x2, 84-inch C/A | 4.89 / 43,000 lb | 8,303 lb | 34,540 lb |
| 4x4, 60-inch C/A | 4.89 / 43,000 lb | 8,633 lb | 34,210 lb |
| 4x4, 84-inch C/A | 4.89 / 43,000 lb | 8,633 lb | 34,210 lb |
Gas rows and the 20,990-lb high cell
The chart pairs the 6.4L HEMI/Aisin six-speed with 4.44 and 4.89 axles. The 4.44 rows use 26,000-lb GCWR and publish 17,970–18,490 lb across the reviewed body configurations. The 4.89 rows use 28,500-lb GCWR and publish 20,470–20,990 lb.
The 20,990-lb high cell belongs to the lighter 4x2/84-inch-C/A, 18,000-lb-GVWR row with a 7,359-lb published base weight. It must not be combined with the 11,950-lb payload shown on a different 19,500-lb-GVWR row.
Payload and trailer maxima are different decisions
RAM defines estimated payload as GVWR minus base weight. The highest reviewed payload is 11,950 lb on a gas 4x2/60 row at 19,500-lb GVWR and 7,552-lb base weight. The diesel rows publish 11,200 lb in 4x2 form and 10,870 lb in 4x4 form at the reviewed 19,500-lb GVWR.
Those figures exclude the upfit and aftermarket equipment weight. A service body, crane, dump body, tanks, tools, occupants, cargo and hitch can consume much of the chassis allowance before trailer tongue or pin load is applied.
Completed-vehicle rating chain
Collect the chassis build record, incomplete-vehicle document, final-stage certification, body manufacturer's instructions and installed-equipment list. Confirm engine, transmission, axle, drive, wheelbase, cab-to-axle length, GVWR, front and rear GAWR, GCWR and tire/wheel ratings.
Then weigh the completed truck in normal working condition and the coupled combination with the intended trailer loaded. Compare individual axles as well as totals. The lowest chassis, upfit, hitch, tire, wheel, trailer or legal limit controls.
Hitch and rear-overhang checks
RAM's source says recommended tongue weight depends on the class of receiver and the upfit hardware limits. A long rear overhang, hitch extension, body structure or non-factory mounting can materially affect the coupling system even when the chassis GCWR is high.
Verify hitch model and installation, frame attachment, extension, safety-chain anchors, coupler, trailer brakes, wiring and actual tongue or pin load. Never treat the 34,540-lb chassis cell as approval of an undocumented receiver or body-mounted hitch.
The current 2026 maximum matches—but the powertrain changed
RAM's current U.S. page still publishes a 34,540-lb diesel maximum for 5500 models and 43,000-lb maximum GCWR. It describes a 2026 6.7L Cummins with a TorqueFlite HD eight-speed, while the 2023 matrix uses an Aisin HD six-speed.
The matching headline number does not make the model years interchangeable. Current specifications are retained as current context only; exact 2023 calculations continue to use the original 2023 matrix and its row identities.
Canadian verification
The detailed chart is labelled U Market. It does not establish a Canadian VIN's chassis equipment, finished rating, operating class or provincial allowance. RAM Canada's current page confirms a Canadian chassis-cab family but covers 2026 rather than the 2023 truck documented here.
For a Canadian candidate, obtain the VIN/build or sales-code record, Canadian model-year literature, incomplete-vehicle document, final-stage labels, axle ratio, wheelbase/C/A identity, upfit and hitch documents, tire/wheel ratings and loaded scale tickets. No vehicle-specific evidence was supplied.
RAM 4500 and 5500 are separate selectors
The reviewed 2023 RAM 4500 Crew Cab diesel chart tops out at 29,220 lb with 37,500-lb GCWR and a 4.44 axle. The RAM 5500 chart reaches 34,540 lb with 43,000-lb GCWR and a 4.89 axle. Those figures belong to separate chassis and row families.
Do not transfer a 5500 maximum to a 4500, or use a 4500 payload table for a 5500. The badge, axle ratio, build record and completed-vehicle documents must all agree.
Used RAM 5500 evidence to inspect
Inspect frame and body mounts, rear overhang, suspension, steering, brakes, cooling system, driveline, tires, wheels, PTO or hydraulics, trailer wiring and hitch structure. Look for corrosion, collision repairs, cracks, overload signs, altered mounts and evidence of sustained commercial or crane use.
Photograph every chassis, final-stage, tire, wheel and hitch label. Obtain maintenance and upfit records, then scale the truck and intended trailer. Aftermarket springs or air systems do not rewrite factory GVWR, GAWR or GCWR.
RAM 5500 towing-capacity questions
What is the highest value in the reviewed chart? 34,540 lb for identified 2023 4x2 Crew Cab diesel rows with a 4.89 axle and 43,000-lb GCWR.
What do the reviewed 4x4 diesel rows reach? 34,210 lb with the 4.89 axle, or 23,210 lb with the 4.44 axle.
What is the highest reviewed gas cell? 20,990 lb; it is separate from the chart's highest gas payload configuration.
Does every RAM 5500 tow 34,540 lb? No. Axle, drive, body and working load change the answer.
Can the chart rate a completed Canadian service truck? No. Build, final-stage, hitch and loaded-weight evidence are required.
Does the current matching maximum prove identical equipment? No. The current page describes a later eight-speed powertrain; the 2023 chart uses the Aisin six-speed.
Evidence note: manufacturer documents establish the specific facts and applications cited. Buying workflows and cost scenarios are DieselTrucks.ca editorial guidance. These pages do not publish measured failure rates or confirm the condition, recall status or capacity of a particular truck.
