RAM 4500 towing capacity belongs to the incomplete chassis and its completed body, not the badge alone. RAM's original U.S.-market 2023 Crew Cab chart reaches 29,220 lb only for identified 4x2, 60-inch cab-to-axle diesel rows with the 6.7L Cummins, Aisin HD six-speed, 4.44 axle and 37,500-lb GCWR. The chart's highest reviewed gas cell is 20,970 lb with the 4.89 axle. Drive, cab-to-axle length, engine, axle, GVWR, GCWR, installed body, hitch and final-stage labels remain attached to every figure. Sources were checked on 9 September 2026.
Exact answer from the 2023 Crew Cab chart
The highest reviewed RAM 4500 trailer cell is 29,220 lb. RAM ties it to the U.S.-market 4x2 Crew Cab, 60-inch cab-to-axle row with the 6.7L Cummins, Aisin HD six-speed, 4.44 axle and 37,500-lb GCWR. The same trailer value appears across published 15,000-, 16,000- and 16,500-lb-GVWR variants because their base chassis weight is unchanged in that row family; their estimated payload values are not the same.
That is a bare-chassis matrix result, not a completed service-body promise. The upfit, occupants, tools, tanks, cargo, hitch and trailer pin or tongue load change the working calculation. A 4x4 truck, 84-inch cab-to-axle chassis, 4.10 axle or gas engine selects another cell.
Four diesel configuration examples
All four examples use the 6.7L diesel and Aisin HD six-speed. The table demonstrates the base-weight effect of drive and cab-to-axle length; it does not replace the full manufacturer matrix or prove the configuration of a used truck.
| 2023 Crew Cab diesel configuration | Axle / GCWR | Published base weight | Maximum trailer |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4x2, 60-inch C/A | 4.44 / 37,500 lb | 8,127 lb | 29,220 lb |
| 4x2, 84-inch C/A | 4.44 / 37,500 lb | 8,267 lb | 29,080 lb |
| 4x4, 60-inch C/A | 4.44 / 37,500 lb | 8,480 lb | 28,870 lb |
| 4x4, 84-inch C/A | 4.44 / 37,500 lb | 8,561 lb | 28,790 lb |
What the 4.10 axle changes
In the same four diesel body configurations, RAM pairs the 4.10 axle with a 32,000-lb GCWR rather than the 37,500-lb GCWR shown for 4.44 rows. Maximum trailer values fall to 23,720 lb for 4x2/60, 23,580 lb for 4x2/84, 23,370 lb for 4x4/60 and 23,290 lb for 4x4/84.
The difference cannot be inferred from engine badges or dual rear wheels. Verify the axle ratio and the specific chart row using build records, labels and physical evidence before using a number.
Gas rows have two axle families
These are 6.4L HEMI/Aisin six-speed chassis rows. The 4.89 axle adds 2,500 lb of GCWR in the reviewed matrix, but completed-vehicle weight and component limits still determine usable trailer capacity.
| 2023 Crew Cab gas example | 4.44 axle / 26,000-lb GCWR | 4.89 axle / 28,500-lb GCWR |
|---|---|---|
| 4x2, 60-inch C/A | 18,470 lb | 20,970 lb |
| 4x2, 84-inch C/A | 18,330 lb | 20,830 lb |
| 4x4, 60-inch C/A | 18,120 lb | 20,620 lb |
| 4x4, 84-inch C/A | 18,030 lb | 20,530 lb |
GVWR changes payload, not every trailer cell
For the 4x2/60 diesel row, RAM publishes the same 8,127-lb base weight and 29,220-lb trailer value at 15,000-, 16,000- and 16,500-lb GVWR. Estimated payload changes from 6,870 to 7,870 to 8,370 lb. The chart defines payload as GVWR minus base weight and warns that values are estimated.
Do not combine the highest GVWR payload with a differently equipped chassis. The installed body, options and aftermarket equipment are explicitly excluded from the published base weight, and real occupants, tools, fluids and cargo consume the remaining allowance.
Completed-vehicle evidence is mandatory
A RAM 4500 leaves the chassis manufacturer incomplete. The final-stage manufacturer or upfitter adds a flat deck, service body, dump body, crane, tanks, tool storage or other equipment, along with mounting, rear overhang and load-distribution consequences.
Collect the incomplete-vehicle document, final-stage certification, upfitter manual, body model/serial information, build record, axle ratio, wheelbase and cab-to-axle identity. Inspect frame alterations, mounts, hitch structure, wiring, hydraulics, PTO equipment, tires, wheels, brakes and rear-axle loading. A generic chassis chart cannot approve a completed vehicle.
Hitch and tongue-weight boundary
The 2023 chart says recommended tongue weight is determined by the class of receiver and the hardware limits of the upfit. It does not grant a universal receiver, fifth-wheel or gooseneck rating to every completed RAM 4500.
Verify the installed hitch, frame attachment, coupler, extension or rear overhang, safety-chain anchors, trailer brakes, wiring and actual tongue or pin load. The lowest rated truck, upfit, hitch, tire, wheel, trailer or legal component controls.
Current 2026 numbers do not backfill 2023
RAM's current U.S. chassis-cab page publishes 34,540 lb as the diesel family maximum and identifies it with 5500 models, not every RAM 4500. The same page identifies 21,240 lb as the current gas maximum for 4500 models and describes later eight-speed transmissions. RAM Canada's current page likewise covers the 2026 chassis-cab family.
Those current figures and powertrains must not be transferred into the 2023 six-speed Crew Cab matrix. This page therefore uses 29,220 lb as the exact high cell for the reviewed 2023 RAM 4500 Crew Cab document and keeps later model years separate.
Canadian verification
The detailed matrix is labelled U Market. It does not establish an individual Canadian truck's chassis equipment, completed rating, operating class or legal allowance. Current RAM Canada pages provide a Canadian manufacturer path but cannot validate a 2023 VIN.
For a Canadian candidate, obtain the VIN/build or sales-code record, Canadian model-year literature, incomplete-vehicle document, final-stage labels, axle ratio, cab-to-axle and wheelbase, upfit documentation, hitch labels, tire/wheel ratings and loaded scale tickets. No VIN, label image, build sheet or measured weight was supplied here.
A completed RAM 4500 worksheet
The towing tool can organize arithmetic but cannot recover missing build or final-stage evidence. Pause at a headline maximum whenever the exact row or completed-vehicle limit is unknown.
| Check | Evidence | Pass condition |
|---|---|---|
| Chassis identity | VIN/build record, year, cab, drive, C/A, engine, transmission, axle and GVWR | One exact RAM row identified |
| Completed body | Final-stage certification, body maker/model, mounting and equipment list | Installed weight and limits documented |
| Working load | Occupants, tools, tanks, cargo and separate loaded axle weights | GVWR and both GAWRs retained |
| Coupling | Hitch model, installation, extension, labels and actual tongue/pin load | Every component supports the load |
| Combination | Loaded truck plus loaded trailer | At or below GCWR and trailer limits with practical reserve |
Used work-truck inspection
Photograph every chassis, final-stage, tire, wheel and hitch label. Inspect the frame, body mounts, rear overhang, suspension, steering, brakes, cooling system, driveline, trailer wiring, PTO or hydraulics and evidence of corrosion, collision repair, overload or repeated commercial use.
Weigh the truck in its normal working condition and then the coupled combination with the intended trailer loaded. Springs, air bags or heavier hitches may change behaviour or component capacity, but they do not rewrite the manufacturer's GVWR, GAWR or GCWR.
