Chevrolet Canada advertises 36,000 lb as the 2026 Silverado 3500HD maximum, but its detailed Canadian guide's highest populated 3500HD cell is 35,500 lb for a Duramax Regular Cab, long-bed, 2WD dual-rear-wheel truck with 43,500-lb GCWR. The guide marks that cell as requiring WT with the Max Trailering Package, yet its footnote also says trucks without the package are reduced to 35,500 lb. This unresolved source discrepancy means 36,000 lb should not be assigned to a specific truck from the guide alone. The detailed diesel conventional ceiling is 20,000 lb. Sources were checked on 9 September 2026.

Exact 2026 answer and the source discrepancy

Chevrolet Canada's current Silverado HD page and the overview chart on page 3 of its 2026 Trailering Guide publish a 36,000-lb 3500HD family maximum. The detailed 3500HD table on page 39 instead tops out at 35,500 lb for both fifth-wheel and gooseneck coupling on the Duramax Regular Cab, long-bed, 2WD DRW row with 14,000-lb GVWR and 43,500-lb GCWR.

That gooseneck cell carries a footnote saying WT with the Max Trailering Package is required and that capacity without the package is reduced to 35,500 lb—the same number printed in the populated cell. The sources do not expose a separate 36,000-lb row or explain the mismatch. This guide preserves both statements rather than altering the table. For an actual load decision, use the truck's build-specific trailering label, certification information and current Chevrolet documentation; do not infer the missing 500 lb.

Selected Duramax SRW and DRW rows

The asterisk retains the unresolved Max Trailering footnote described above. These selected cells are a configuration map, not a substitute for the original table or a VIN-specific rating. Regular, Double and Crew Cab; long or standard bed; 2WD or 4WD; SRW or DRW; engine; wheel size; GVWR; GCWR; package and hitch type must stay attached to the number.

Crew Cab and daily-use configurations

The Canadian table lists a Duramax Crew Cab Standard Bed 2WD SRW at 21,900 lb in-bed and the 4WD version at 21,600 lb, both with 30,000-lb GCWR. A Long Bed 2WD SRW reaches 22,070 lb, while Long Bed 4WD SRW is 21,490 lb. The High Country Long Bed 4WD SRW row is lower again at 21,200 lb.

DRW does not make every cab equivalent. The Duramax Crew Cab Long Bed 2WD DRW cell is 31,440 lb, the 4WD cell is 31,000 lb and the High Country 4WD DRW cell is 30,900 lb. Those are all above 30,000 lb, consistent with Chevrolet Canada's current family statement, but none equals the advertised 36,000-lb maximum.

Conventional towing has its own ceiling

The reviewed detailed table publishes a 20,000-lb conventional maximum in identified Duramax rows, including Double Cab SRW, many Crew Cab SRW configurations and the diesel DRW rows. Regular Cab SRW diesel rows remain at 14,500 lb conventional even though their in-bed ratings exceed 22,000 lb.

The 36,000-lb headline cannot be transferred to a receiver hitch. Confirm the selected conventional row, installed receiver, ball mount, ball, coupler, weight-distribution requirements, trailer brakes and every component label. The lowest rated part or vehicle limit governs.

Gas 3500HD values are separate

The 6.6L gas V8 uses 26,000-lb GCWR in the reviewed table. Its highest conventional cell is 18,700 lb on the Regular Cab, long-bed, 2WD DRW row. Its highest in-bed value is 19,080 lb on the Regular Cab, long-bed, 2WD SRW row—different rear-wheel configurations for the two maxima.

Other examples include 18,380 lb in-bed for Regular Cab 4WD DRW, 18,300 lb for Double Cab 2WD DRW and 17,800 lb for Crew Cab 4WD DRW. Do not import Duramax GCWR, conventional or in-bed values into a gas truck.

SRW, DRW and pin weight

Dual rear wheels open the highest-GCWR rows and add rear tire capacity, but DRW alone is not a rating. Cab, bed, drive, engine, GCWR, package and hitch still select the line. Added springs or air bags may alter ride behaviour but do not rewrite the manufacturer's GVWR, GAWR, GCWR or trailer rating.

Chevrolet's guide says conventional tongue weight should generally be 10–15 percent of loaded trailer weight and gooseneck/fifth-wheel kingpin weight 15–25 percent. At 35,500 lb, that in-bed range is roughly 5,325–8,875 lb before the hitch itself, occupants and other cargo are counted. This arithmetic illustrates why the actual payload and rear-axle calculation matters; it is not permission to place that weight on a particular truck.

Hitch preparation is not a complete approval

Chevrolet describes the available Z6A Gooseneck/5th Wheel Prep Package as a hitch-ready platform with a box-mounted trailer harness, spray-on bedliner and drilled/capped holes. It does not by itself identify the installed hitch model, its rating or the final trailer-to-cab clearance.

Retain the hitch manufacturer's model, labels, mounting instructions and rating, plus bed/frame compatibility, coupler or ball, breakaway equipment, trailer brakes and measured pin weight. The hitch must be attached to the frame, and its rating cannot exceed the truck, tire, wheel, axle or trailer limits.

The towing tool can organize arithmetic but cannot reconcile the 36,000/35,500-lb source conflict or recover missing build evidence. Keep the original guide revision and label photographs with the truck record. No Canadian VIN, build sheet, hitch record or scale ticket was supplied for this page.

Keep model years separate

This page summarizes Chevrolet's 2026 Canadian guide and current 2026 model page. It does not rate a 2025, 2024 or earlier Silverado 3500HD. Nearby model years can change GCWR, package rules, powertrain output, footnotes and populated cab/drive cells even when the body and Duramax badge look similar.

Use GM's manuals portal and the correct model-year trailering literature for the candidate. The archived 2024 manufacturer chart and 2025 Duramax supplement are retained as primary historical and operating references, not as permission to mix their values with the 2026 table.

Used 3500HD evidence to inspect

Photograph every truck, tire, wheel and hitch label. Inspect the frame, receiver or bed-hitch mounting, bed structure, rear axle and suspension, steering, brakes, cooling system, driveline, trailer wiring, seven-pin socket and brake-controller operation. Look for corrosion, collision repair, overload evidence, cracked or elongated mounting points and sustained commercial or heavy in-bed use.

Confirm the model-year engine and transmission from authoritative records. Chevrolet Canada's current 470-hp/975-lb-ft Duramax specification does not establish an earlier truck's output or towing rating. Obtain service history and weigh the intended loaded combination; aftermarket hardware remains separately rated equipment.

Silverado 3500HD towing-capacity questions

What maximum does Chevrolet Canada advertise? 36,000 lb for the 2026 Silverado 3500HD family.

What is the highest populated cell in the detailed Canadian 2026 table? 35,500 lb for both fifth-wheel and gooseneck coupling on the Duramax Regular Cab, long-bed, 2WD DRW row with 43,500-lb GCWR.

Why are those numbers different? The guide does not explain it. Its Max Trailering footnote also repeats 35,500 lb as the reduced non-package value, so this page preserves the conflict and requires build-specific confirmation.

What is the diesel conventional maximum in the detailed table? 20,000 lb in identified populated rows, not every 3500HD.

Does every Duramax dually tow 35,500 lb? No. The reviewed Double and Crew Cab DRW cells range from 30,900 to 31,580 lb, while Regular Cab 4WD DRW is 31,500 lb.

What is the gas maximum? 18,700 lb conventional and 19,080 lb in-bed, in different Regular Cab configurations.

Can this page rate a Canadian VIN? No. The actual build, labels, installed hitch, trailer and measured loads control.
