Ford F-550 towing capacity is a completed-vehicle question, not a pickup-bed maximum. In Ford's U.S. 2026 Super Duty chassis-cab selector, properly equipped diesel F-550 configurations reach 19,500 lb conventional, 34,200 lb fifth-wheel and 34,300 lb gooseneck. The two in-bed maxima require the 6.7L diesel, 4.30 axle, 43,000-lb GCWR and High-Capacity Trailer Tow Package 535, while the published chassis tables assume a 715–1,115-lb second-unit body. The installed body, hitch, final-stage labels and actual loaded axle weights can therefore reduce the usable result. This page keeps model year, body, engine, axle, cab, wheelbase, drive, GCWR, package and hitch type attached to every figure. Sources were checked on 9 September 2026.
Exact answer from Ford's 2026 chassis-cab selector
Ford's 2026 commercial selector lists a maximum loaded conventional trailer weight of 19,500 lb for identified F-550 chassis-cab rows. The corresponding highest reviewed fifth-wheel and gooseneck cells are 34,200 and 34,300 lb. These are separate properly equipped configurations, not three interchangeable ratings for every F-550.
The 34,200/34,300-lb entries are Regular Cab 4x2 cells on the 6.7L diesel, 4.30-axle, 43,000-lb-GCWR line. Ford footnotes that GCWR for High-Capacity Trailer Tow Package 535 and Payload Plus Upgrade Package conditions. A completed work body, accessories, occupants, cargo and hitch mass still consume the truck's weight allowance.
2026 F-550 range summary
The low and high figures are extrema observed in Ford's published 2026 F-550 table, including gas-engine and package-split cells. They are not a continuous range and do not imply that every intermediate value or body configuration exists. For a diesel-only shortlist, use the diesel rows below and the original selector.
| Hitch table | Lowest reviewed published cell | Highest reviewed published cell | High-value boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conventional | 18,500 lb | 19,500 lb | 19,500-lb cells are tied to 43,000-lb GCWR or identified payload-package splits |
| Fifth-wheel | 20,800 lb | 34,200 lb | 34,200 lb is the diesel 4.30 / 43,000-lb-GCWR Regular Cab 4x2 cell |
| Gooseneck | 21,000 lb | 34,300 lb | 34,300 lb is the corresponding Regular Cab 4x2 cell; hitch type remains distinct |
Selected 2026 diesel rows by GCWR
Each range summarizes Ford's Regular Cab, SuperCab and Crew Cab, 4x2 and 4x4, and listed wheelbase columns. The lower value within a row commonly appears in a longer or heavier cab/drive configuration. Do not select a range endpoint until the actual column is known.
| 6.7L diesel row | Conventional across published cab/drive/wheelbase cells | Fifth-wheel range | Gooseneck range |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4.10 axle / 34,500-lb GCWR | 18,500 lb | 24,700–25,700 lb | 24,900–25,800 lb |
| 4.30 axle / 39,000-lb GCWR | 18,500 lb | 29,200–30,200 lb | 29,400–30,300 lb |
| 4.30 axle / 43,000-lb GCWR, packages 535 and 68M | 19,500 lb | 33,100–34,200 lb | 33,300–34,300 lb |
Cab, wheelbase and drivetrain select the column
The F-550 table is not organized by badge alone. Regular Cab columns span 145.3-, 169.3-, 193.3- and 205.3-inch wheelbases in 4x2 and 4x4. SuperCab columns use 167.9- and 192.0-inch wheelbases, while Crew Cab columns use 179.8 and 203.8 inches.
Record cab, drivetrain and wheelbase from the truck and build documentation, then select the matching cell. Cab-to-axle and body length also matter to upfit suitability even when they are not the headline towing variable. A longer service body cannot inherit the Regular Cab 4x2 maximum merely because the engine and axle ratio match.
The second-unit body assumption is not your body weight
Ford states that the selector's F-Series chassis-cab trailer weights assume a second-unit body at 80 lb per foot of cab-to-axle, producing the 715–1,115-lb assumption shown above the F-550 matrix. That standardized assumption makes the generic table usable for comparison; it does not certify a particular dump, service, rollback, crane, flat-deck or landscape body.
Obtain the body manufacturer's model, installation record, final-stage certification, completed empty weight and axle distribution. Add permanently mounted equipment, hydraulic systems, tool storage, auxiliary fuel, occupants and cargo. If the actual completed truck is heavier than the selector assumption, the remaining combination and axle margin can be lower.
Conventional towing needs an installed receiver decision
Ford explicitly says Super Duty chassis cabs do not offer a conventional hitch receiver as a factory-installed option. The table publishes maximum loaded trailer weights, but it does not supply the completed truck with a receiver of matching capacity.
Identify the receiver manufacturer and model, mounting instructions, frame compatibility, fasteners, extensions, reinforcement, rating label, ball mount and ball. Inspect how the body and rear structure affect access and load paths. Use the lowest applicable limit among the truck selector, completed-vehicle documentation, receiver, ball mount, ball, trailer coupler, tires and actual loaded weights.
Fifth-wheel and gooseneck installation remains vehicle-specific
The commercial selector separates fifth-wheel and gooseneck values even when they differ by only 100 or 200 lb. Preserve the correct table and cell. A custom flat deck or body structure changes where and how an in-bed or frame-mounted hitch can be installed.
Require the hitch model, installation instructions, frame and body compatibility, fastener and reinforcement record, rated coupler or ball, clearance through the intended articulation, and evidence that the installer accounted for the completed vehicle. Never treat the table's 34,300-lb gooseneck maximum as an automatic rating for an unidentified deck or hitch.
Package 535 opens a GCWR row, not unlimited capacity
Ford requires High-Capacity Trailer Tow Package 535 for the F-550's 43,000-lb GCWR. The package includes an upgraded rear axle and increased GCW for the 6.7L diesel; Ford also identifies standard or included towing-control equipment in the package table.
The package does not erase GVWR, front or rear GAWR, tire, wheel, hitch, body or trailer limits. Confirm it from the build record and installed equipment rather than a seller's description. Ford warns that warranty coverage may be affected when required equipment is absent; exact warranty questions belong with Ford and the vehicle record.
Payload, GVWR, GAWR and GCWR can govern first
Ford's guide uses 10% conventional tongue load and 15% fifth-wheel/gooseneck king-pin load in its assumptions. At 34,300 lb, 15% is 5,145 lb before the hitch, occupants and other cargo. That arithmetic is a planning warning, not approval; actual measured load and every component limit govern.
| Limit | What it answers | Evidence for the completed F-550 |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum loaded trailer weight | Does the trailer fit the correct Ford selector cell? | Exact year, engine, axle, GCWR, cab, drive, wheelbase, hitch and package row |
| Completed payload margin | Can the truck carry body, equipment, occupants, cargo and hitch load? | Final-stage labels, completed curb/scale weight and current load |
| GVWR | Is the entire loaded truck within its rating? | Completed-vehicle certification label and scale result |
| Front/rear GAWR | Is each axle within its rating? | Labels, tires/wheels and separate axle weights |
| GCWR | Is loaded truck plus loaded trailer within the powertrain row? | Exact selector row and measured combination weight |
What the 2025 and 2023 guides establish
Ford's 2025 chassis-cab guide publishes the same reviewed 34,200-lb fifth-wheel and 34,300-lb gooseneck diesel maxima and a lower 18,500-lb conventional ceiling on its 43,000-lb-GCWR line. The 2026 table raises that identified conventional line to 19,500 lb, so even adjacent model years must not be merged.
Ford's 2023 full guide provides a separate historical F-550 chassis-cab selector and then-current package structure. It is useful for routing an older truck to the correct evidence, not for filling a 2025 or 2026 cell. Ford's towing centre retains archived guides; preserve the year and revision of every number used.
Canadian F-550 verification
Ford Canada presents the 2026 F-550 as a Super Duty chassis cab and shows gas as standard, with diesel availability requiring exact build confirmation. The numeric matrix summarized here is Ford's U.S. generic towing guide. It does not establish a Canadian completed vehicle's individual rating, legal allowance or licensing class.
For a Canadian truck, reconcile the VIN/build record, incomplete-vehicle documentation, final-stage certification, engine, axle, cab, drivetrain, wheelbase, packages, body, tires, wheels and installed hitch. Use the actual labels and model-year owner information. No VIN, final-stage file or scale ticket was supplied, so this page does not claim a particular Canadian F-550 can use any maximum shown.
Ford F-550 towing-capacity questions
What is the maximum 2026 F-550 conventional towing capacity? Ford's generic chassis-cab selector reaches 19,500 lb in identified properly equipped rows, but the completed body and installed receiver still control.
What is the maximum fifth-wheel rating? The highest reviewed 2026 F-550 cell is 34,200 lb for a diesel 4.30-axle, 43,000-lb-GCWR Regular Cab 4x2 configuration.
What is the maximum gooseneck rating? The corresponding highest reviewed cell is 34,300 lb.
Does every diesel F-550 have 43,000-lb GCWR? No. Ford also publishes 34,500- and 39,000-lb-GCWR diesel rows, and package 535 is required for 43,000 lb.
Is an F-550 a heavier F-450 pickup? No. The F-550 is covered here as a chassis cab with second-unit-body and final-stage requirements; pickup ratings do not transfer.
Can the generic table rate my Canadian work truck? No. Verify the exact completed vehicle, labels, hitch installation and loaded scale weights.
