The Ford F-450 pickup has separate conventional, fifth-wheel and gooseneck ratings, and it must not be confused with an F-450 chassis cab. In Ford's U.S. 2026 selector, properly equipped F-450 DRW pickups reach 30,000 lb conventional, 35,000 lb fifth-wheel and 40,000 lb gooseneck. The 40,000-lb figure belongs to a high-output 6.7L diesel, 4.30-axle, 48,000-lb-GCWR row requiring the 40K Gooseneck Tow Package; it is not the conventional or fifth-wheel rating. This page preserves cab, drivetrain, output, GCWR, hitch and package boundaries and explains how to verify an individual Canadian truck. Sources were checked on 9 September 2026.

Exact answer from the current selector

The 2026 Ford guide lists 30,000 lb as the maximum conventional trailer weight for an F-450 DRW pickup. Its in-bed selector reaches 35,000 lb fifth-wheel and 40,000 lb gooseneck. These are maximum loaded trailer weights for properly equipped configurations under Ford's stated assumptions—not simultaneous capabilities or the rating of every F-450.

Cab and hitch style materially change the answer. In the conventional table, the 30,000-lb diesel cells are Regular Cab entries; reviewed Crew Cab diesel entries are 25,000 lb, and a package-specific 18,200-lb row also appears. In the standard-output in-bed table, non-package gooseneck cells range from 33,000 to 38,600 lb across the listed Regular/Crew Cab and drive configurations.

The low endpoints include all published F-450 diesel selector rows reviewed, including the package-specific conventional case. They are not advertised minimums for every truck. The table describes observed endpoints, not a continuous band of available ratings.

Selected 2026 conventional F-450 pickup rows

Ford presents the Regular Cab and Crew Cab figures on different GCWR lines; keep the applicable GCWR with the selected cell. The high-output label does not raise the reviewed conventional pickup cells above 30,000 lb. A separate 48,000-lb-GCWR package row publishes 18,200 lb conventional, reinforcing why the gooseneck package cannot be treated as a universal increase across hitch types.

Selected 2026 fifth-wheel and gooseneck rows

The paired values show why “fifth-wheel/gooseneck” cannot be reported as one number. Ford's maximum 40,000-lb row is separately footnoted for the 40K Gooseneck Tow Package. It does not change the reviewed maximum fifth-wheel value from 35,000 lb, and the exact original selector row must be retained with any use of the package figure.

The hitch hardware rating is not the truck rating

Ford lists a 30,000-lb weight-carrying and weight-distributing receiver capacity for the F-450 DRW, with a 3,000-lb maximum tongue load. The guide immediately warns that receiver capacities can exceed the selected vehicle's maximum loaded trailer weight. Use the lower applicable limit.

The accessory section likewise describes available fifth-wheel hitches rated to 20,000 or 35,000 lb and a gooseneck kit rated to 27,500 lb with a 2-5/16-inch ball or 40,000 lb with a 3-inch ball. Hardware capability does not assign the truck a matching tow rating. The vehicle selector, hitch/ball, installation, labels and loaded weights all need to support the same combination.

What the 2025 guide confirms

Ford's 2025 Super Duty pickup guide publishes the same reviewed headline F-450 pickup maxima: 30,000 lb conventional, 35,000 lb fifth-wheel and 40,000 lb gooseneck. It also retains the 25,000-lb conventional Crew Cab cells and the separately footnoted package conditions.

That agreement does not authorize a 2025 row for a 2026 truck or vice versa. Use the model-year document and its revision. The compact 2025 guide is marked revised 10 January 2025; the reviewed 2026 full guide is marked revised 24 November 2025. Preserve the date with any extracted figure because Ford can revise published selectors.

Pickup versus chassis cab is a hard boundary

This page covers the factory F-450 DRW pickup selector. An F-450 chassis cab is sold for completed upfits and has its own commercial-vehicle tables, powertrain information, wheelbases, body assumptions and required-equipment rules. A pickup maximum cannot be transferred to a dump body, service body, rollback or other completed chassis cab.

Identify the vehicle line before using any figure. For an upfitted truck, obtain the incomplete-vehicle and final-stage documentation, installed-body information, axle/tire ratings and actual completed weights. The fact that both vehicles carry an F-450 badge does not merge their ratings or page intent.

Payload, GVWR, rear GAWR and GCWR can govern first

Ford uses a 10% conventional tongue-load assumption and 15% for fifth-wheel/gooseneck king-pin load in the guide. At 40,000 lb, 15% is 6,000 lb before occupants, cargo and hitch hardware. That calculation is a planning warning, not an approval: actual loading still must satisfy every truck, axle, tire, wheel, hitch and trailer limit.

Canadian F-450 verification

The figures transcribed here come from Ford U.S. generic towing guides. For a Canadian truck, confirm pickup identity, model year, standard or high-output engine, 4.30 axle, cab, drivetrain, package content, tires and installed hitch, then verify the Canadian certification and carrying-capacity labels and current model-year owner information.

Ford's towing centre says the general guide is not VIN-specific and points owners to model-year documents and a VIN-based calculator. No VIN or vehicle labels were supplied, so this page does not report a Canadian truck's individual capacity, legal allowance or recall status. Resolve any mismatch among the VIN result, labels, hitch documentation and generic chart before towing.

Do not backfill an older F-450

Ford retains archived towing guides back to 1996. Older F-450s can have different pickup/chassis identities, engines, transmissions, axles, wheelbases, hitches and rating methods. Select the correct archived model-year guide and preserve its exact configuration and revision notes.

The reviewed 2023 and 2024 guides remain separate evidence sets. This page does not infer a historical range, copy a modern 40K package backward or fill an unavailable cell from a nearby year. For a modified or upfitted used truck, resolve completed configuration and actual weight before relying on any generic table.

Ford F-450 towing-capacity questions

What is the maximum 2026 F-450 pickup conventional towing capacity? Ford's selector reaches 30,000 lb in the properly equipped Regular Cab diesel cells.

What is the maximum fifth-wheel rating? The highest reviewed F-450 pickup fifth-wheel cell is 35,000 lb.

What is the maximum gooseneck rating? The selector reaches 40,000 lb in a high-output diesel, 4.30-axle, 48,000-lb-GCWR row requiring the 40K Gooseneck Tow Package.

Can I use 40,000 lb with a fifth-wheel hitch? No. The 40,000-lb figure is a package-specific gooseneck rating; the reviewed fifth-wheel maximum is 35,000 lb.

Is every F-450 pickup rated to tow 30,000 lb conventionally? No. Crew Cab diesel cells reviewed are 25,000 lb, and a package-specific conventional row is 18,200 lb.

Does this page apply to an F-450 chassis cab? No. Chassis cabs use separate commercial selector tables and completed-vehicle evidence.
