Reject identity conflicts before mechanical debate
Record VIN, model year, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 or GMC Sierra 1500, Limited/LTD status where applicable, engine RPO, transmission, drivetrain, cab, box, market, emissions label and calibration. Photograph identifiers.
Pause when the advertisement, registration, RPO, installed engine, modules or invoices disagree. Require replacement-engine, transmission or cab work to connect through serial or part information and programming records.
An LM2/LZ0 mistake can misroute parts, intervals and service evidence. Do not solve it by creating an assumed specification from the badge.

Do not turn a bulletin into frequency
GM bulletin 21-NA-149 describes an LM2-only condition involving rough running, misfire, low power, a service-engine light, certain fuses and a broad code set. It directs harness inspection and published diagnostics before parts replacement.
That record supports a precise diagnostic branch for a matching truck. It does not say every LM2 has damaged wiring, publish prevalence or prove that one year is worse.
Reject a candidate when matching symptoms recur and the circuit path, repair or recheck remains unresolved—not merely because its model year appears in the application table.
Avoid unresolved wiring and module-replacement chains
For a matching complaint, preserve codes and status, freeze-frame or equivalent context, fuse history, connector and pin condition, chafe or short evidence, circuit measurements, harness repair method and a comparable recheck.
The bulletin notes that control modules had sometimes been replaced unnecessarily. Treat a module invoice without the selecting diagnostics as incomplete evidence, especially when the original symptom returned.
A protected and repaired harness with repeatable normal operation is different from a truck with cleared codes, disturbed wiring and no documented result.
Reject seller pre-warming when cold operation matters
Arrange a true cold soak where practical. Record ambient temperature, block-heater use, batteries, wait-to-start behaviour, cranking, smoke, idle, leaks, warning sequence and codes.
GM describes temperature-dependent starting delay and short cold turbo-protection behaviour. Compare the observation with the exact operating guidance before calling it abnormal.
If the seller pre-warms the truck and will not permit a valid repeat, classify cold operation as unavailable. Avoid when cold reliability is essential and that high-consequence gate remains unknown.
Reject unexplained warm or loaded symptoms
Bring the engine and transmission to stable temperature under a safe, legal duty representative of planned work. Record power, smoke, temperatures, regeneration state, warnings, codes and shifting, then perform a timed warm restart.
Avoid when reduced power, repeated warning, abnormal fluid behaviour, harsh shift or another material symptom appears and the seller cannot provide a qualified diagnosis and comparable repair result.
One clean unloaded loop cannot close a towing, grade, winter or high-utilization concern. Do not exceed verified ratings to create a test.
Treat missing maintenance as priced uncertainty
Build a dated ledger for oil and filter, fuel filter, air filter, cooling systems, transmission, transfer case, axles, DEF and scheduled belt work. Retain product specifications, parts, kilometres and service provider.
Add towing, hilly routes, delivery use, extended idle, short trips, cold starts, dust and storage. GM's 2021 supplement distinguishes normal and severe duty and provides an idle-time equivalence for maintenance accounting.
Avoid when missing chronology combines with present symptoms, unsuitable fluids or a major overdue service that the purchase budget cannot absorb. Do not claim missing paperwork alone proves damage.
Bound the oil-pump-belt obligation
The 2021 maintenance table includes scheduled oil-pump-belt replacement and a time condition. Use the exact candidate's manual to establish what applies; do not import the later LZ0 validation statement as an LM2 interval.
For claimed completion, require date, kilometres, parts, labour, related sealing or fluid work and post-service findings. For pending work, obtain a written candidate-specific scope and downtime plan.
Avoid when the service is due or unknown, access and related work cannot be priced, and the owner cannot tolerate the unresolved cost or interruption. Scheduled service itself is not a common-failure claim.
Reject open fuel and contamination boundaries
For long crank, no-start, stall or low power, require fuel level and source, filter history, water-in-fuel status, restriction, commanded and actual pressure, electrical tests and the reproducing condition.
When contamination is suspected, preserve a safe sample, filter evidence and qualified findings. Map the tank, lines, filter, pumps, rail and injectors inspected, cleaned, replaced or reused.

Reject unexplained DPF, DEF or EGR warnings
Record exact messages and codes, soot and ash evidence, pressure, temperatures, regeneration history, DEF quality or dosing data and EGR findings that apply.
GM's supplement distinguishes DPF self-cleaning, fuel and oil requirements and DEF warning consequences. A completed regeneration, erased code or replacement sensor does not prove the initiating condition was found.
Avoid when warnings recur, monitors are not ready after recent clearing, original-equipment hardware is missing or legal restoration and diagnosis cannot be bounded.
Keep the transmission recall separate but mandatory
Transport Canada recall 2024637 describes a defined 2020–2022 diesel Silverado and Sierra population in which transmission-control-valve wear could cause harsh shifting and potentially rear-wheel lock. The corrective path uses software to detect excessive wear and limit operation.
Check the Canadian VIN with the manufacturer and retain the dated result and repair order. Diagnose present shift or propulsion symptoms separately even if campaign completion is recorded.
Avoid a candidate when relevant safety status or current symptoms remain unresolved. Do not report the campaign as an LM2 engine defect or use it to blacklist all 2020–2022 trucks.
Reject unsupported software and emissions configurations
