The labels attached to the exact truck are a stronger starting point than a generic model maximum. Their wording and arrangement vary by manufacturer, model year and market.
Start with the certification label
The certification label normally identifies the vehicle and states its gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and front and rear gross axle weight ratings (GAWR). Record the VIN and confirm it matches the registration and sale documentation.
- Photograph the complete label without obscuring characters.
- Record GVWR, front GAWR and rear GAWR exactly as shown.
- Check for damage, replacement labels or information that does not match the truck.
Find tire, loading and payload information
The tire/loading label identifies the specified tire context and inflation information. A separate occupant-and-cargo or payload statement may be present. Do not treat GVWR, axle ratings, tire limits and payload as interchangeable numbers.
Why the exact truck matters
Cab, bed, drivetrain, trim, installed equipment and rear-wheel configuration can change available payload within the same model family. Use the exact labels together with the owner manual and model-year towing guide.
- Passengers, tools, accessories and hitch equipment consume payload.
- Trailer tongue or pin weight is carried by the truck.
- The lowest applicable truck, axle, tire, hitch or trailer limit still governs.
Photograph the labels as a set
Capture the vehicle certification label, tire/loading label and any applicable alterer or final-stage labels. Include a wider photo showing their location, then a readable close-up. Record the units exactly as printed rather than transcribing a rounded value from an advertisement.

Resolve label conflicts before calculating
A missing, damaged or inconsistent label is an identification problem to resolve with the manufacturer or appropriate qualified source. A tire with a higher load rating does not rewrite the truck's certification label. On a completed chassis cab, include the body and final-stage documentation when establishing the working vehicle's limits.
