GVWR, GCWR and trailer weight answer different questions
GVWR limits the loaded completed truck. GAWR limits each axle. GCWR limits the loaded truck and loaded trailer together. A hitch, coupler, tires, wheels, trailer axles and the trailer's own GVWR add further limits. The legal or operational allowance may be lower again.
Available arithmetic is not authorization. Subtracting an estimated truck weight from 37,500 lb can produce a number, but it cannot prove that the selected 5500HD carries that GCWR, that its finished body and hitch support the result, or that axle and tire limits remain intact. Use only the exact completed-vehicle values and measured weights.
Why the body changes the towing result
The 5500HD leaves the chassis manufacturer as an incomplete vehicle. A service body, dump, stake body, recovery body, tanks, crane, compressor, tool storage, hydraulic equipment or PTO installation changes curb weight, weight distribution, rear overhang and coupling geometry. Wheelbase, cab-to-axle distance, rear overhang, body length, body weight, hitch position and load centre must be evaluated together. A hitch extension or coupling mounted far behind the rear axle can add leverage and increase rear-axle and frame demand.
Match the VIN/build record to the physical wheelbase and cab, then verify the body manufacturer's installation rules. Hitch approval is an independent limit
Record the exact receiver, pintle, fifth-wheel or other coupling system, including manufacturer, model, labels, mounting instructions and any extension or body integration. Confirm frame attachment, safety-chain anchors, wiring, trailer-brake controls, coupler compatibility and the actual vertical load at the coupling.
The smallest rating in the complete chain controls. Even when the chassis has GCWR reserve, a lower-rated hitch, altered frame, body structure, tire, wheel, axle or trailer component can govern first. Canadian truck and completion boundary
