If a seller supplies only an advertised family maximum, pause rather than filling missing fields from another 4500HD, model year, body or wheelbase.
What the VIN-specific IVD contributes
GM Upfitter says every GM incomplete vehicle receives a VIN-specific label at the assembly site, attached to that vehicle's IVD package. The calculation begins only after GCWR is verified
If an authoritative record for the exact completed truck supplies GCWR, one screening calculation is GCWR minus the actual loaded truck weight. That result is not automatically the allowed trailer weight. It must also remain within the truck's trailer or coupling rating, completed-body limits, hitch and mounting limits, GVWR, both GAWRs, tire and wheel ratings, the trailer's own ratings and applicable operating rules.
Use actual working weight with driver, passengers, fuel, tools, tanks, cargo, body, crane or hydraulics and hitch installed. Then weigh the coupled combination and individual axles with the intended trailer loaded. The lowest applicable limit controls. If GCWR or an explicit trailer limit is missing, the calculator cannot manufacture it.
Body, wheelbase and rear overhang change the result
Regular and Crew Cab identity, 4x2 or 4x4 drive, wheelbase, cab-to-axle dimension and the installed body all change empty weight and axle distribution. A steel service body, dump body, rollback, crane, tanks or permanently carried equipment may consume substantial chassis capacity before trailer tongue or pin load is added.
Rear overhang and hitch position also affect leverage on the frame and rear axle. GM's body-builder manual warns that exceeding GVWR or GAWR, uneven load distribution, improper fifth-wheel settings, unsuitable equipment and poor frame modifications can create damaging stresses. Identify the receiver, pintle, fifth-wheel or gooseneck hardware by manufacturer, model and label. Tow/Haul mode and Trailer Sway Control appear in Chevrolet's 2024 operating guide, but control features are not capacity ratings. Photograph the VIN, incomplete and final-stage labels, body plate, tire/wheel labels and every hitch label. Inspect the frame rails, body mounts, rear overhang, suspension, steering, brakes, driveline, cooling, tires, wheels, trailer wiring, PTO, hydraulics and any welded, drilled, plated or repaired areas. Look for corrosion, collision repair, overload signs, cracks and uneven tire or brake wear.
Obtain the body build file, service history and records for later alterations. Weigh the truck in normal working condition and again with the intended trailer coupled. A clean road test or functioning Tow/Haul switch does not prove that the completed vehicle is correctly rated.
