The reviewed primary sources do not support blacklisting every 2004- or 2005-labelled LLY Duramax. GM's original manuals define separate vehicle and maintenance contexts, while PIP3394F covers specific 2004–2005 injector-driver codes and harness paths plus a narrow 3–15 March 2005 light-duty coolant-wicking branch. Another GM bulletin defines one normal warm tick. None publishes year-by-year failure rates. Avoid an individual truck when identity cannot be reconciled, a serious symptom remains unresolved, repair evidence is incomplete, configuration is illegal or unsupported, the complete vehicle is unsafe, verified capacity misses the assignment or service downtime exceeds the operating plan.
Years-to-avoid verdict: reject evidence failures
Do not begin with a model-year blacklist. Begin with identity, safety, operating, repair, legality, capacity and support gates that apply to every candidate.
Avoid a truck when VIN, RPO, build date, application, installed hardware and records remain materially inconsistent. Avoid unresolved fuel, cooling, lubrication, noise, electrical or transmission conditions when their consequence exceeds the plan.
A supported repair can close one issue. Missing evidence does not become a pass because the truck is a preferred year, and an earlier year is not automatically a failure.
Separate year research from candidate rejection
This matrix routes research. It is not a prevalence table, reliability ranking or claim that one year is safer.

Avoid trucks whose LLY identity cannot be proved
Record VIN, model year, build date, Chevrolet or GMC model, pickup or medium-duty application, cab and body, engine RPO, transmission, drivetrain, axle, original market and emissions label.
Connect replacement engines, cabs, modules and transmissions to serials, part numbers, invoices and programming. Separate original and installed configurations when they differ.
PIP3394F uses different connector references for Silverado/Sierra and Kodiak/TopKick. Decline when application identity remains irreconcilable; a 6.6L badge, exterior or seller shorthand is insufficient.
Reject the wrong manual or supplement match
GM's 2004 and 2005 Silverado manuals provide distinct vehicle identification, loading, towing, service and maintenance contexts and direct diesel-specific questions to matching diesel literature.
Retrieve the exact Chevrolet or GMC manual, correct Duramax supplement and current application-specific service information. Preserve the pages and revision used with the inspection.
Pause when labels, installed hardware and documents disagree. Do not borrow an interval, capacity, warning or procedure from a neighbouring year to force a conclusion.
Keep the March 2005 build check narrow
PIP3394F points to inventory bulletin 05054 only for 2005 light-duty C/K trucks built from 3 March through 15 March 2005. It describes a possible surge-tank coolant leak that may wick into the harness and induce listed injector-driver codes.
Verify actual application and build date, then document the leak source, harness path, connector state, electrical finding, repair and comparable recheck.
Do not reject every 2005 truck because this branch exists. Reject a matching candidate only when the material coolant or circuit condition remains unresolved or its consequence exceeds the plan.
Reject unresolved injector-driver evidence
GM PIP3394F covers defined 2004–2005 LLY applications with rough running, misfire, surge or chuggle and specified injector-driver codes. It directs current diagnostics and inspection of documented harness areas before parts replacement.
Preserve current and history codes, freeze-frame context, circuit measurements, connector condition, chafe findings, repair method and post-repair result. GM cautions against replacing injectors merely because a high balance value accompanies the listed codes.
Avoid repeated parts replacement without circuit evidence or a condition-matched recheck. Do not generalize the candidate finding to every truck in that year.
Require the application-correct harness inspection
For a matching Silverado or Sierra, PIP3394F identifies possible chafe near the FICM harness brace and connector C107. Kodiak and TopKick applications use a different connector reference.
Photograph the path before disturbance and retain continuity, short, resistance, terminal and chafe evidence. Record the protective repair and repeat the original operating condition.
A quick visual check of one accessible loom is incomplete. A fuel-system invoice also cannot close an injector-driver chain when the relevant wiring branch was skipped.
Reject serious noise outside GM's normal-tick scope
GM 02-06-01-022O includes LLY and describes one random metallic tick most audible at 70°C coolant temperature or warmer from idle to approximately 1,500 rpm as normal.
That does not cover a cold-only clatter, regular knock, load-dependent noise, misfire, oil-pressure warning or metal evidence. Record temperature, rpm, load, sound location and fluid or pressure context.
Pause for correct diagnosis when the sound falls outside the bulletin. Decline when a serious abnormal noise or its consequence remains unresolved.
Avoid unexplained cold-start or hot-restart behaviour
Arrange a genuine cold soak when practical. Record ambient temperature, block-heater use, battery state, cranking, wait-to-start behaviour, smoke, idle stability, leaks, warnings and codes.
Then assess fully warm operation and restart after a known interval. Separate batteries and starter, glow control, fuel supply, high pressure, injectors, wiring and compression.
A seller-warmed truck has not passed the cold gate. Avoid the candidate when a high-consequence starting condition remains unexplained or cannot be assessed within the buying plan.
Reject incomplete fuel-pressure evidence
For long crank, no-start, stall or low power, preserve codes and conditions. Inspect fuel quality, filtration, restriction, air ingress, priming, low-pressure supply, commanded and actual rail pressure, wiring and injector return or contribution.
A pump, regulator or added lift-pump invoice is configuration evidence until measurements connect it to the initial condition and a comparable result.
Decline repeated unexplained parts replacement, unsafe operation or a repair boundary beyond the budget. Do not name a failed component from reputation.
Treat injector work as supported, partial or open
For rough running, haze, hard start, fuel knock, low power or suspected fuel in oil, retain codes, condition-specific data, return or contribution evidence, pressure findings, fluid trend and technician conclusion.
For previous injector work, obtain quantity, part numbers, new or remanufactured status, lines and seals, installer, initiating condition and post-repair result.
Avoid the truck when a material symptom or lubrication risk remains open. An injector invoice cannot override PIP3394F's circuit-first path when its listed codes and symptoms match.
Preserve contamination evidence before accepting repair
When water, gasoline, debris or another contaminant is suspected, retain a safe sample, filter evidence, photographs and qualified findings. Identify source and timing without treating sequence alone as causation.
Map which tank, lines, filter, pump, rails and injectors were inspected, cleaned, replaced or reused. Require current LLY-specific guidance for the actual application.
Later GM contamination procedures used for newer Duramax engines do not list LLY in the reviewed set. Decline when the contamination boundary or downstream consequence remains material and open.
Reject unresolved cooling and overheating evidence
Record coolant trend, pressure tests, residue source, cap, hoses, radiator and stack airflow, fan operation, pump and thermostat history, known-load temperatures and any internal-leak testing.
Keep a general cooling investigation separate from the narrow March 2005 surge-tank wiring branch. An unloaded drive may not reproduce a towing or grade concern.
Do not accept or reject a head-gasket story from hose feel or reservoir appearance. Decline when coolant loss, overheating or repair consequence remains unresolved.
Investigate smoke, air and turbo concerns by condition
Describe smoke by colour, duration, temperature, idle or load, altitude and fuel odour. Inspect intake restriction, charge-air plumbing, turbo control, exhaust, sensors, fuel delivery, compression and fluids as applicable.
Shaft feel, visible oil, one code or a seller video cannot establish the cause. Connect the reproduced condition to measurements, selected repair and comparable outcome.
Avoid a candidate with material unexplained smoke or low power, not every truck that shares its registration year.
Avoid unknown or illegal calibration
GM's hard-part evidence bulletin includes LLY calibration verification and pre-disassembly documentation in a warranty context. It does not establish that every tuned truck is damaged or publish failure frequency.
Inventory engine and transmission tuning, injectors, turbo, intake, exhaust, auxiliary fuel equipment, gauges, tire size, axle changes and added wiring. Verify legal status, insurance implications and shop acceptance.
Decline when configuration is illegal, original identity cannot be recovered or diagnostic and support consequences exceed the plan. “Returned to stock” requires evidence.
Reject unverifiable major engine work
For pump, injector, turbo, head, gasket, piston, cylinder or replacement-engine work, require the initiating complaint, pre-disassembly measurements, diagnosis, complete parts and machining scope, assembly identity, installer and validation.
GM's evidence workflow shows why information collected before disassembly matters. A large invoice or “built engine” label cannot prove root cause, reused-system condition or outcome.
Decline when major work creates unbounded identity, assembly or support risk. Give credit only to the documented condition the repair closes.
Treat repeat visits as a chronology
Place symptoms, codes, conditions, tests, parts, programming and outcomes in time order. Several invoices may represent one unresolved complaint, staged diagnosis, an intermittent circuit or unrelated concerns.
Do not count every visit as an independent failure. Ask whether the same condition returned under the same temperature, load and duty and whether prior work addressed the measured cause.
Classify each chain as repaired and rechecked, unresolved or not assessed. Decline when repetition and consequence exceed the buyer's bounded plan.
Treat missing maintenance as uncertainty
Use the exact vehicle manual and diesel supplement to reconstruct oil and filters, fuel filtration, coolant, transmission, transfer case, axles, batteries and scheduled work by date and kilometres.
For equipped 2005 trucks, record the engine-hours display and reconcile it with distance, dates and reported duty. Add towing, plowing, idling, short trips, winter starts, dust and storage.
Fresh fluids set a baseline but do not restore history. Missing records are not failure proof, but the resulting uncertainty must be tested, priced or rejected.
Avoid unresolved transmission and driveline concerns
Identify the actual automatic or manual transmission. Assess fluid, leaks, temperature, engagement, shifts or clutch action, transfer case, driveshafts and axles.
Separate engine flare or low power from converter, clutch, commanded-gear and electrical behaviour. Connect upgrades to builder, specification, reason and post-repair result.
Decline when the complete powertrain cannot perform safely or when open repair and downtime exceed the plan, even if the engine itself operates well.
Reject unsafe chassis and corrosion
Inspect frame and underbody corrosion, brake and fuel lines, steering, suspension, hubs, tires, wheels, hitch, mounts, wiring repairs, collision work and upfits.
Low kilometres do not remove age, salt, storage and seal exposure. High kilometres alone do not describe care or structural safety.
Decline an unsafe or structurally unacceptable truck. Engine reputation, preferred year and purchase discount cannot offset that gate.
Decline capacity or configuration mismatch
Use certification, tire and loading labels and exact configuration literature. Record cab, box or completed body, drivetrain, axle, tires, wheels, hitch and trailer conditions.
Add occupants, cargo, tools, accessories, auxiliary tanks and loaded tongue or pin weight. The GM manuals establish that loading and towing are vehicle-level questions.
LLY identity or claimed power cannot create payload, axle, tire, hitch or combined capacity. Avoid a truck that cannot legally and safely do the defined work.
Resolve Canadian safety status for the VIN
Use Chevrolet Canada's current recall centre for a Canadian candidate and retain the dated VIN result. Use Government of Canada records for Canadian model-level research and confirm applicability and remedy with the manufacturer.
Use NHTSA only for U.S. VIN or model-level context. Keep recalls, special coverages, bulletins, complaints and ordinary repairs distinct.

Avoid service and downtime mismatches
Use Chevrolet Canada's locator to identify possible facilities, then confirm that a shop accepts the exact legacy LLY application, transmission and modifications and has suitable diagnostic capability.
A directory entry does not guarantee expertise, parts, timing, modification acceptance or price. Include recovery, queue, diagnosis, sourcing, programming, reassembly, validation and substitute capacity.

Compare repair exposure with a bounded budget
Separate purchase price, tax, inspection, transport, immediate safety work, maintenance catch-up, diagnosed repair, open investigation, configuration correction and optional upgrades.
